In 2010 the UK Film Council commissioned research into the cultural impact of Film. The resulting report, Stories We Tell Ourselves, begins to analyse and understand the value of film beyond its financial success - or failure. The UKFC hosted a series of dissemination events across the country inviting contributions from film industry professionals and audiences.

In response to this, South West Screen and Watershed organised a live panel discussion which took place at Watershed on 2nd February 2011, in which the report's authors discussed their findings with other industry professionals, and took questions from the audience. In addition to this, Mark Cosgrove, Watershed's Head of Programme, wrote an article to accompany the event which examined the cultural significance of cinema, and its status as an artform.
