The great comic legend, Charlie Chaplin, is a man who probably needs little introduction. But for the uninitiated, Charlie Chaplin was an English comic actor, film director, and composer who shot to fame during the silent film era. Before the end of the first world war, Charlie Chaplin was the most famous film star in the world. Shooting to fame in an era struggling with the ravages of war, Chaplin is remembered for bringing laughter, entertainment, and relief to millions of people when they needed it most.

With programmes such as Kevin Brownlow's Unknown Chaplin and Paul Merton's Silent Clowns, television has helped introduce Chaplin to a new public, and re-affirmed his place in world cinema and the history of comedy.

This panel discussion looks at Chaplin’s place in today's cinema and includes newly discovered home movie footage of Chaplin. Chaired by official Chaplin biographer David Robinson with guests Serge Bromberg, co-founder of Lobster Films, champions of restoring archive and silent films, and Bryony Dixon of the British Film Institute, who runs their Chaplin project.
