Nov 2010

The Encounters International Film Festival has been running since 1995, and is internationally acknowledged as one of the most important celebrations of short film in the world. The festival incorporates two of the UK's leading film festivals, Brief Encounters and Animated Encounters, with a host of crossover events at venues in and around Bristol Harbourside.

Brief Encounters was originally conceived as a one-off festival to mark the centennial of cinema, but was so popular that it became an annual attraction. In 2001, Brief Encounters was joined by Animated Encounters, an event showcasing and celebrating animated films, and the talent, creativity, technology and skills that go into these productions. This festival also enjoyed massive success, and became the UK representative for the prestigious European Cartoon D'Or. Brief Encounters and Animated Encounters were originally held at different times of year. However, in 2006 the two events became amalgamated under the Encounters International Short Film Festival banner.

The festival has continued to expand annually, and the 2010 instalment saw a massive programme of events, including premieres, masterclasses, talks, workshops, guest screenings, and competitions. If you missed the festival, you can still view four of these events and masterclasses, which offer valuable insights into the film industry, as well as expert advice and industry knowledge.
