In its third year, Media Sandbox awarded seven £10,000 commissions to support research and development of innovative content, applications and experiences under two strands: open data and pervasive media.

Life is complicated, so the challenge of Media Sandbox 2010 was to come up with a brilliant idea that could tackle a problem, provide a service or simply offer a fun new experience.

The 2010 scheme invited participants to use open data or mobile, wireless and sensory technologies to develop their projects.

Seven projects were commissioned, and the call was divided into two project strands:

B-Open

Commissioned as part of Bristol City Council and Connecting Bristol's B-Open initiative, three new digital developments helping Bristol lead the way in becoming a smart, green, digital city.

The three 2010 B-Open commissions are Blossom Bristol, I heart my city and Hills are Evil.

Pervasive Experiences

Four ground-breaking ideas that dovetailed mobile, wireless and sensory technologies with content and context, to create meaningful experiences. Experience design lies at the heart of the entertainment and leisure industry from tourist attractions and theme parks to concerts, theatre and cinema. With the rise of new technologies, there’s now an explosion of new and extended genres that use web, mobile and projection to create rich and memorable interactions.

The four 2010 Pervasive Experiences commissions are Biofeedback in Gaming, Operation Sonic Boom, Sculpting with Scent and The AlphaSphere

Media Sandbox is originated and produced by iShed, part of Watershed. Media Sandbox 2010 is in association with Bristol City Council and Connecting Bristol's B-Open initiative and is a Creative Industries iNet programme, supported by South West Screen, ERDF and The South West Regional Development Agency.
