Media Sandbox 2010 Participants Journals
» www.mediasandbox.co.uk
Media Sandbox is a commissioning scheme that provides funding, workspace, and networking opportunities for creative talent. The seven commissioned artists for 2010 kept journals accompanying their work, so you can see how the projects unfolded and developed.
Sep - Dec 2010
Have you ever asked yourself where good ideas come from, and how they are transformed into a reality? The people behind the Media Sandbox scheme have, and have devised the scheme to create an environment where ideas can flourish and materialise without censorship or restriction.
Think of Media Sandbox as a kind of greenhouse – a supportive space that cultivates ideas and allows them to put down roots and spread seeds. This is achieved by providing people with the time, space and support to take creative risks, and because there is no immediate corporate incentive (which results in an environment of competition), the scheme also successfully removes that infamous barrier to creativity - the fear of making a mistake.
Media Sandbox is a collaborative ecosystem connecting creative talent with leading technology companies and content commissioners. By using a collaborative model and providing a supportive space and situation, the scheme nurtures innovation and technology across various industries, resulting in a fertile landscape where ideas cross-pollinate and creativity can bloom.
In 2010, seven £10,000 commissions were awarded to projects as diverse as a virtual horticultural mobile phone game, to a tactile, interactive electronic musical instrument, all of which have borne accompanying journals. The journals not only crack open the creative mechanisms of each project, but are themselves part of the collaborative process. They are essential reading for anyone interested in the creative and innovative techniques that underpin the development of pioneering technology.
