Theatre Sandbox 2010 Artists Journals
» www.theatresandbox.co.uk
Theatre Sandbox is a commissioning scheme that provides funding, workspace and networking opportunities for theatre-makers who wish to integrate interactive technology into their work. The six 2010 commissions are accompanied by journals, so you can see how the projects evolved and progressed.
Apr - Nov 2010
The Theatre Sandbox scheme was introduced in December 2009 as a way of applying the knowledge acquired during Media Sandbox to the Performing Arts. Both schemes explore the potential applications for pervasive media in a creative context. Pervasive media is technology that uses sensors and/or mobile/wireless networks to bring you content (film, music, images, games, etc), which is sensitive to your situation (so where you are, how you feel, or who you are with, etc).
Utilising this technology in a performance context is characteristic of the scheme, which aims to develop new forms of immersive and interactive experience. So, imagine exploring a maze made entirely of sound, or being guided by a map that responds to your ideas and draws them before your eyes. These are just some of the projects that have been developed by Theatre Sandbox, which provides support and funding to theatre-makers to enable them to integrate cutting-edge technology into their practise.
The six 2010 commissions have written journals to document their research and progress. These journals reveal the creative techniques that underpin the development of each project, and are also an essential component of the collaborative process. They are recommended reading for anyone interested in the ways in which pioneering technology is being applied to the arts.
