Textual Analysis
As a member of the audience we obviously bring our own cultural expectations to any film we watch. At the most basic level, we respond to films emotionally and the degree to which we are excited, frightened or moved by a film will contribute considerably to our enjoyment. However, in Film and Media Studies we must also offer intellectual analysis, that is be able to explain our reasoning with reference to the text.
This section
offers three ways into understanding East is East: a consideration of narrative
structure; reading the film as melodrama; close textual analysis on a sequence.
The narrative and genre
(Advanced Level only) sections offer brief readings of the film whilst the sequence
section is a series of questions for students to answer.
