Dug Out Live Event
A night of live music and film
Sat 15 Oct 2130hrs - 0200hrs
Whatever happened to Bristol’s music scene? After the dizzy and spectacular heights reached by Bristol artists in the 1990s such as Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size’s Reprazent, Tricky and Kosheen newer artists are beginning to gain media attention and show a different side to the city’s music culture.
TheDug Out Live event hosted at Watershed on 15 October aims to showcase some of these evolving acts alongside some of the more established artists such as John Stapleton’s BlowPop. The event boasts five live acts, four DJ sets, one live film soundtrack, VJs and a series of videos and film which celebrate Bristol’s music culture past and present, representing a `slice’ of music that is happening in the city today.
Bristol has a vibrant and eclectic music scene. Acts like Kid Carpet, Gravenhurst, War Against Sleep, Minotaur Shock, Bronze Age Fox, I am the Mighty Jungulator, Fuzz Against Junk, System Vertigo, Bronnt Industries Kapital have developed their warped and diverse sounds alongside a variety of DJ dance based music through such club nights and record labels as BlowPop, Hope Recordings, NRK, Full Cycle and many more. Many of these acts are now receiving national, international and niche press attention.
For the past five months, a fascinating snapshot of the musical lifeblood of Bristol has been online at www.dugout.org.uk The site, part of the Electric Pavilion project ( www.electricpavilion.org), uses the Dug Out club – one of a number of unique Bristol club spaces that was emblematic of the developing music scene in the 1970s and ‘80s – as a focus and metaphor for the peculiarities of Bristol and its creative community. The site presents artists’ web pages, writing about scenes past and present, photographic galleries, images, audio interviews and plenty more.
Pete Webb, writer, musical archaeologist, and member of Statik Sound System who is one of the creative team behind this project says:
“The aim of Dug Out Live is to fly the flag for the ever diverse, challenging and startling music scene in Bristol. It is an initiative developed from a website that aims to be a `living archive’ of that scene past and present: www.dugout.org.uk represents a unique portal into the cut up, mash up, splice and stick music culture of a fascinating city.”
TheDug Out Live club event will host both a Live Room and DJ Room featuring some of the best of Bristol’s music talent, and ticket holders can also chill out in the cinemas with some special celluloid treats.
