e-merge at Worle

e-merge at Worle

The final part of the ACE-funded e-merge project took place at Worle Community School, with a 2 day intensive workshop as part of Enrichment Week. PMStudio resident Jackie Calderwood has worked with the school for over 8 years since it achieved media arts status, and was keen to introduce pervasive media to the school, bringing e-merge back into the SW region and an educational context.

15 Worle students from years 7,8,9 had their first experience of mediascape– as ‘users’ ‘artists’ ‘designers’ and then ‘teachers’. Dodging showers, the students tried out different styles of mscape, including the remapped e-merge filmmaking mediascape. This prompted a discussion about the sites of central London, similarities and differences to Worle, and the places or experiences from the school that students would want to share to newcomers. Monday afternoon was an intense hive of activity: trying out the mscape software, recording sounds, photographs, video and editing. Overnight Jackie formatted the videos for mscape, and on Tuesday morning we tried out 2 new mediascapes– ‘Welcome to Worle’ and ‘e-merge Student Videos’ featuring 38 short filmic clips made the previous day. Then came the audience– two visiting groups of younger children from Worle’s partner primaries. Students from Worle acted as hosts, technical support for visitors using the ipaqs, and documenting the event and the visitors’ feedback. There was a lovely moment when one young visitor said they’d liked the photos of the sheep (yes, a school with sheep, chickens and pet rats no less!) and asked what the host had done to make the mediascape– a shy proud smile, ‘photograph the sheep!’

Jackie will be continuing to work with Worle and their partner schools on the Strata Collective project Soundlines, exploring personal journey and ancient landscape through locative soundworks and moving image.
