Developments at Watershed

Scatter in production

Since the 25th Birthday celebrations last year Watershed has continued to go from strength to strength.

The balcony has been successfully opened and has quickly become one of the most sought after outdoor spaces in the city, online ticketing has finally arrived offering more choice and access to the programme, and work has also started on a process to increase the amount of locally sourced and organic products available in the Café/Bar.

Scatter print

Scatter

During these developments, the support and feedback we have received from our customers has been key to their success.

To mark these achievements we have commissioned acclaimed Bristol artist and filmmaker Joe Magee to produce a screenprint for Watershed. The result is called Scatter – a stunning hand-printed 10 colour screen print measuring just over a metre wide.

Scatter will sit alongside Waveshed, the image Joe created to celebrate the 25th Birthday, in the Café/Bar.

Working with Spike Print Studio , Joe has produced a limited edition of 100 hand-crafted original prints of this unique artwork which are available to buy (unframed) through Watershed Box Office at the initial special price of £200.

Joe worked with Spike Print Studio's resident printmaker, Edward Talbot, to create the edition. Edward used his technical expertise and silk screen experience to contribute towards the high quality result.

Joe says of the piece...

Scatter was driven by a series of processes, beginning with the gathering of a cluster of pixels from an accidentally-corrupted digital file. Retaining the colours of these pixels a series of lines was created - before being converted into waves using algorithmic filters. These waves were then broken up and 'scattered' using simple human intuition and very quick arbitrary dispersal. This process was an attempt at 'lightness' (of touch and spirit) as a reaction to the rigidity of the original mechanical techniques. Finally the waves were screen printed by hand in 10 block colours.

Alongside this he has developed a personal practice culminating in a series of exhibitions of work at galleries around the UK. This practice encompasses a range of traditional and electronic media especially print making and moving image works - experimentation with animation, video and interactive art.

These works, supported by a series of awards from Arts Council of England and UK Film Council, have shown widely internationally at galleries and film festivals including London, Edinburgh, Tampere and Cannes, winning several prizes. Magee has twice presented work at ISEA (Japan, Liverpool).

In 2007 Magee collaborated with performer and comedian Bill Bailey to produce large-scale video art and multi-media works for his tour of UK arenas, culminating at Wembley. The collaboration is set to continue with new work later this year.

Always aiming to retain a personal agenda in this work, one of the highlights of his career was once being sacked by The Daily Telegraph when they found his regular contributions had political messages embedded in braille which went against the rightwing agenda of the publication.

In July, Magee's substantial body of work will become the focus of a special issue of Werk magazine, a limited edition arts publication based in Singapore. A book of Magee's back catalogue is scheduled to be published next year.
