The Cat Leaves Home (15) S
Dir: Nami Iguchi
94 mins, 2004, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Feb 2008
This slowburning film about female rivalry centres on two young women as they attempt to navigate a complicated relationship. Although they’ve known each other since childhood, they keep falling for the same men, a fact that serves both as a bond and a division between the two. When they find themselves living together, what begins as the normal everyday tensions between roommates gradually escalates into a feud of dramatic proportions. Directly inspired by Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s Café Lumière and the films of Yasujiro Ozu, this is a subtly perceptive portrait of jealousy and friendship in contemporary Japan.

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and this month there's a focus on the music of the maestro Ennio Morricone.
