No One's Ark (15) S
Dir: Nobuhiro Yamashita
111 mins, 2002, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Feb 2008
During Japan’s economically volatile mid-90s, enterprising couple Daisuke and Hisako have failed miserably at selling their health drink in Tokyo, amassing a huge debt. In order to recover financially, they retreat to Daisuke’s island hometown where they plan to get help from his friends and relations there, but things don’t turn out as they expected and they turn to extreme measures to get themselves back on their feet. Featuring quirky characters and surreal visuals, this deadpan comedy overlays a subtle anxiety about how to succeed in an uncertain world.
