Kamikaze Girls (12A) S
Dir: Tetsuya Nakashima
103 mins, 2004, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Feb 2008
This frenetic, comic journey into Japan’s youth subcultures is a glorious blend of kitsch, grit and humour. Set principally in a small town outside of Tokyo, the film traces the slow-to-boil but surprisingly fierce friendship between Momoko, a devotee of the Lolita look and all things Rococo, and Ichigo, a snarling biker chick. Adapted from the novel by Novala Takemoto which became a pop-culture phenomenon in Japan, TV commercial maestro Nakashima brilliantly captures the book’s sly yet brash commentary about Japanese society and its ever-conspicuous obsessions.
