Water Lilies (15) S
Dir: Céline Sciamma
Cast: Pauline Acquart, Louise Blachère 85 mins, 07, France , Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in June 2008
This ethereally beautiful French movie explores the developing sexuality of three 15-year-old girls in a Parisian satellite town, drawn together by a passion for competitive synchronised swimming. Best friends Marie and Anne exist on the fringes of the local synchronised swimming team and while Anne fantasises about François, the local stud, Marie seems more interested in his girlfriend Florian. This mixture of chlorine, hormones and frustrated desire bursts with charm and humour, offering a spot-on portrayal of the agonies of adolescent lust and rejection with a few fantastic ‘synchro’ routines thrown in.
