Scandinavian Chillers: Jar City (15) S
Dir: Baltasar Kormákur
Cast: Ingvar Eggert Sigur?sson, Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir 95 mins, 2006, Iceland/France/Germany, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2010
Based on the best-selling novel by celebrated Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indridason, this enigmatic and absorbing thriller follows a detective investigating the unremarkable murder of a local lowlife, “a typical Icelandic murder, messy and pointless” as he considers it, though he soon discovers there may be darker forces at play. Elsewhere in the area, a father mourning the death of his daughter from a genetic condition obsessively searches for information on the origin of the disease. One of Icelandic cinema’s most exciting voices, Kormákur (101 Reykjavík, The Sea) weaves these two stories together with a unique style and atmosphere reminiscent of its setting – ice cold but utterly sublime.
This is possibly Kormakur's best effort to date, strongly confirming his position as one of Iceland's leading filmmakers. Screen International.
