Migrations: Tony Gatlif Double Bill

No filmmaker has captured the spirit and energy of the Romany so brilliantly as Galtif, and both films of this double bill lead the viewer on a vibrant voyage through Gypsy experience with stunning photography and vivacious music.

Latcho Drom U France 1993 1hr 43mins Subtitled This mesmerising road movie charts the journey of Gypsy musicians and communities from their beginnings in the state of Rajahstan in India, through the Middle East, up the Balkans to Central Europe, and ending in France and Spain. Gatlif uses traditional songs instead of spoken words to evoke the history of his people, drawing an intensely lyrical portrait of Romany culture.

Gadjo Dilo 15 France/Romania 1997 1hr 37mins Subtitled Romain Duris (Molière, Paris) stars as a young man who ventures into rural Romania in search of a legendary Gypsy folk singer he remembers from his childhood. As this outsider makes his way through the countryside and earns the grudging trust of the community, the film develops into a rich and intoxicating brew of humour, drama, colour and music.
