35 Shots of Rum (12A) S
Dir: Claire Denis
Cast: Alex Descas, Grégoire Colin 100 mins, 2008, France/Germany, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in July 2009
Known for her sensual and contemplative body of work, which includes Beau Travail and Vendredi Soir, Claire Denis here crafts a tender, subtle family drama about the close connection between a Parisian widower, his university student daughter, and the friends, neighbours and romantic interests that circle them. With a wordless interdependence and easy rhythm within the small family unit, the film explores a kind of rite of passage as father and daughter must face up to the fact it’s time for her to live her own life. Eloquent performances from a fine ensemble cast, including Denis regulars Alex Descas and Grégoire Colin, anchor this delicate celebration of love.
A film to be savoured. Guardian
5/5 35 Shots of Rum draws its power from silences, glances, hugs and smiles - all of which speak more eloquently than any dialogue. It's a profound, discreet, hugely touching work that resonates in the memory. Telegraph
The magic of Claire Denis's exquisite 35 Shots of Rum is that although so much is left unsaid, it's one of the most emotionally eloquent films you'll see this year. Times

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a brand new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and it all kicks off this weekend with a special focus on the music of the maestro himself: Ennio Morricone.
