Frozen River (15)
Dir: Courtney Hunt
Cast: Melissa Leo, Misty Upham 96 mins, 2008, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in July 2009
Living in upstate New York, Ray Eddy finds herself alone with her kids and completely broke when her gambler husband runs off with their savings. An answer to her problems seems to come in the form of Lila Littlewolf, another poor single mother who is involved in a risky operation transporting Chinese and Pakistani immigrants across the frozen St. Lawrence River from Canada to the USA. Centred on a stunning, Oscar®-nominated performance from indie veteran Melissa Leo (21 Grams), Frozen River illuminates the grim reality of the desperate struggle for economic survival which motivates those involved in human trafficking.
Filmic
A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a brand new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and it all kicks off this weekend with a special focus on the music of the maestro himself: Ennio Morricone.
Carnage
Now Showing
Roman Polanski's latest sees two couples try to talk through a minor incident amicably - with quite the opposite result! A hysterically funny descent into some very, very enjoyable bad behaviour.
