Encounters 09: Preview: Ponyo (U)
Dir: Hayao Miyazaki
100 mins, 2008, Japan
Please note: this was screened in Nov 2009
Part of the Fresh Flix section of the Young People's Film Festival. This visual treat from Studio Ghibli animation genius Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle) follows the adventure of a little boy, Sosuke, who discovers a magical goldfish called Ponyo. Ponyo longs to become human but she cannot make the change without the help of friends old and new – and will the sea be able to give her up? With its child's view of an enchanting world loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid and a voice cast that includes Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon, this is an absolute delight for all ages.
With thanks to Optimum Releasing.
This screening will take place at Showcase Cinema de Lux. Fee: £5.00 (no concessions)
