Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire (15)
Dir: Lee Daniels
Cast: Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique 109 mins, 2009, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Aug 2011
Tough, sublime and undeniably authentic, this is a genuinely inspirational journey into the hell of a life endured by Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones (fearless newcomer Gabourey Sidibe), an illiterate, obese teenager in 1987 Harlem. Pregnant by her father and relentlessly abused by her mother Mary (Mo’Nique is a terrifying Oscar®-worthy revelation), she is transferred to an alternative school where she learns to express herself after years of private abuse and public neglect. An inner-city horror story that is less about overcoming adversity than about pure survival: Precious is an important powerhouse of a film that is a raw mix of dark and light, ugliness and beauty, despair and hope.
Sapphire, author of the book that told the story of Precious, will be talking at a Festival of Ideas event at 18:00, just before the screening.
Fee: £4.60 full / £3.60 concs for each event. Tickets for Talk + Screening priced at £8.00 full / £6.00 concs. Please note that you can only purchase the Combo deal for the Talk + Screening in person or by calling Box Office on 0117 927 5100 to book tickets.
