Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (15)
Dir: Mat Whitecross
Cast: Andy Serkis, Ray Winstone, Bill Milner, Naomie Harris 115 mins, 2009, UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Feb 2010
Andy Serkis brings the late singer, song writer, and activist Ian Dury to radical, angry, provocative life in this raw, unflinching biopic of the talented, troubled man. Dury's rise to fame with the Blockheads in the 1970s saw him struggle with the demands of family, particularly his relationship with his son (Bill Milner). His rise to punk megastardom is interspersed with childhood memories of his punishing battle with polio, which left him disabled and angrily politicised. A vibrant collage of live performances (Serkis is so convincing the Blockheads have asked him to tour with them), pop art and surreal animation gives ferocious, spirited gusto to a man who was both loved and loathed.
