Brothers (15)
Dir: Jim Sheridan
Cast: Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal 105 mins, 2009, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Feb 2010
A remake of the lauded 2004 Danish film of the same name, Brothers is an intense drama about war, family and forgiveness. Tobey Maguire is Sam, a Marine returning to Afghanistan much to the horror of his high school sweetheart Grace (Natalie Portman) and two daughters. Days before he leaves, his errant brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) arrives back on the scene after being released from prison. When Sam's helicopter is shot down he is presumed dead, and Tommy becomes an unexpected source of strength while forming a dangerous attraction to Grace. But Sam is alive - held hostage and treated with shocking cruelty. After his rescue he is a shattered man turned into a monster by his actions and driven mad by jealousy: can he forgive himself and avoid destruction?
