Father of My Children (12A) S
Dir: Mia Hansen-Løve
Cast: Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Chiara Caselli 110 mins, 2009, Germany/France, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in March 2010
From the outside, film producer Gregoire (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) seems to have it all: heaps of charm, a loving wife, three doting daughters and an exciting career. Devoted to intelligent, independent film, he struggles to juggle the demands of fussy financiers and distributors with his family duties. Overwhelmed by these multiple pressures, he makes an irreversible, tragic decision that shifts the emphasis in the second half of the film to his shattered wife Sylvia (Chiara Caselli), left to pick up the pieces. A supremely confident tale of responsibility, family and the anxieties of modern life, this is a sophisticated, mature second feature from upcoming French talent Hansen-Løve.
5/5 An outstanding, undemonstrative family drama.Guardian
