No One Knows About Persian Cats (12A) S
Dir: Bahman Ghobadi
Cast: Hamed Behdad, Ashkan Kooshanejad, Negar Shaghaghi 106 mins, 2009, Iran, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in March 2010
Filmed illegally in Tehran, this new film from Bahman Ghobadi (Turtles Can Fly) explores Iran's illicit underground music scene. We follow a musical duo as they desperately (and sometimes dangerously) seek out band mates and the legal paperwork they need for a promised London gig. Despite 'Western and decadent music' being banned the country is a hotbed of indie, rock, metal, rap, blues and jazz where young talents risk arrest by rehearsing in barns, basements and rooftops. The music from genuine Iranian artists is impassioned and frustrated, full of a fast paced energy that will stay with you long after the credits roll. Raw, believable and profound.

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and this month there's a focus on the music of the maestro Ennio Morricone.
