Lourdes (U) S
Dir: Jessica Hausner
Cast: Sylvie Testud, Elina Löwensohn 96 mins, 2009, Austria/France/Germany, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in March 2010
Christine (Sylvie Testud) is a young woman who uses a wheelchair as a result of multiple sclerosis. Lonely and craving kindness, she feigns piousness merely so she can go on church trips with much needed company. When her group make a pilgrimage to Lourdes Christine wakes one morning seemingly cured by a miracle that provokes both envy and wonder: what is a miracle exactly? Why Christine and not me? It is this curiousity about miracles, faith and the human spirit that makes Lourdes such a beguiling, delicately handled pleasure. Something between a religious satire and a redemption story, this is a respectful, gently humourous celebration of all forms of belief.
Double Points for all Loyalty Card holders on Lourdes screenings!
A minor miracle.. a superbly observed, meticulously constructed drama. Sylvie Testud is one of the most beguiling actresses in the world, and whom I would happily pay to watch do nothing more than sleep for 24 hours.Telegraph
