Scandinavian Chillers: Insomnia (15) S
Dir: Erik Skjoldbjaerg
Cast: Stellan Skarsgard 96 mins, 1997, Norway, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in March 2010
Disgraced Swedish detective Jonas Engstrom (Stellan Skarsgard) arrives in the bleak wastes of Northern Norway to hunt for a killer who leaves barely a trace even methodically washing the hair of the pretty victim. In a failed attempt to catch the killer Engstrom accidentally kills his partner and protects himself by covering it up. His guilt and insomnia resulting from the region's 24-hour-a-day summer sunshine causes him to make fatal mistakes as he loses his grip on his mind and the case. A polished, complex psychological thriller with a superbly paranoid performance from Skarsgard set in one of Europe's most eerie, moody and evocative landscapes.
Scandinavian Chillers: Sunday Brunch with a Shiver

We present four Scandinavian Chillers - slowburning, dark and brooding, these titles are cerebral, chilly and set in bracingly austere and forbidding landscapes.
