Double Take (12A)
Dir: Johan Grimonprez
Cast: Alfred Hitchcock, Ron Burrage 80 mins, 2009, Germany/Belgium/Netherlands
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in April 2010
This hugely original hybrid of fiction and nonfiction is a witty, entertaining tale of Alfred Hitchcock, doppelgangers, Cold War paranoia and the ascendancy of television. Using a montage of archive footage and Hitchcock's own sense of humour, the film explores his preoccupation with doubles and the climate of fear that surrounded his work. A fictional narrative by author Tom McCarthy where Hitchcock meets his own doppelganger on the set of The Birds binds all this material together to stunning effect. While questions of intrigue, personal delusion and deception are left to ponder, this is above all a love letter to Hitchcock and his work.
Be sure to check out the 50th anniversary re-release of Hitchcock's classic Psycho when it comes to Watershed from Fri 30 April.
