Samson and Delilah (15)
Dir: Warwick Thornton
Cast: Rowan McNamara, Marissa Gibson 101 mins, 2009, Australia
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in April 2010
Warwick Thornton won the Camera d'Or prize for first time filmmakers at Cannes, where his film was described as the best love story the jury had seen for many years. Its beautiful but brutal romance takes place in a tiny aboriginal community in central Australia where teenagers Samson (Rowan McNamara) and Delilah (Marissa Gibson) begin a clumsy, mostly non-verbal courtship. When tragedy strikes they flee from the violence of their settlement to Alice Springs, where their desperate situation escalates. With authentic performances from its two leads and flushes of warm humour to punctuate the realities of modern aboriginal life, this is a refreshingly honest, tender film that signals the arrival of a bright new voice in world cinema.
