La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet (PG) S
Dir: Frederick Wiseman
Cast: The Paris Opera Ballet 158 mins, 2009, France/USA, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in April 2010
Wiseman (Titicut Follies, High School), one of the world's greatest documentarians, casts his eye on the Paris Opera Ballet, one of the world's greatest dance companies, in this fascinatingly seductive portrait of an institution and its artists. Interviews and voice over are abandoned to bring us beautifully photographed footage of dancers in rehearsals, staff meetings, and on stage. We see their artistic director juggle endless administrative issues as glimpses are caught of the hair, makeup and costume staff. The film's focus is not on pure performance or dance, but instead on the tireless work that goes into the process of creating art.
5/5 An example of cinema and its most musical, an awe-inspiring celebration of body, mind and movement. Time Out
4/5 Wonderful. Times

Roman Polanski's latest sees two couples try to talk through a minor incident amicably - with quite the opposite result! A hysterically funny descent into some very, very enjoyable bad behaviour.
