She, a Chinese + Q&A (18)
Dir: Xialou Guo
Cast: Huang Lu, Wei Yibo, Geoffrey Hutchings, Chris Ryman 98 mins, 2009, UK/France/Germany
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in May 2010
The award winning debut feature from filmmaker and novelist Xiaolu Guo (How Is Your Fish Today, A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers) tells the story of Mei, an enigmatic Chinese woman raised in a backwater. Her search for a different life takes her to the city and eventually to England. Exploring themes of alienation and personal identity that Xiaolu's readers will recognise from her books, this is an intense and emotional story told with real style and sincerity.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A hosted by documentary filmmaker Mark Kidel with PJ Harvey collaborator John Parish who created the score for the film. With thanks to Optimum Releasing.
Fee: £7.00 full / £5.50 concession
