Four Lions (15)
Dir: Chris Morris Cast: Riz Ahmed, Chris Wilson, Julia Davis 100 mins, 2009, UK Please note: this was screened in May 2010
The satirical genius behind Brass Eye takes on religious extremism with this hilarious comedy of terrors that may or may not provoke a little controversy. Forget about all the inevitable fuss, however - this is daring filmmaking that brilliantly lampoons fanaticism. Our cell of wannabe jihadists are not slick, trained assassins but a group of bumbling, bickering fools from Yorkshire whose road to martyrdom is not as easy as they imagined. The laughs come thick and fast as the group attempt to run while wearing explosives, train crows to fly bombs, and practice their "anti-surveillance measure" of furiously shaking their heads to avoid detection on CCTV. A superb riotous comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously.
