The Reader (15)

This haunting love story from the director of The Hours stars Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes as former lovers torn apart by a dark secret. In postwar Germany, teenager Michael (David Kross) begins a passionate and clandestine affair with the elusive Hanna (Winslet), a woman twice his age who loves being read aloud to. Eight years after she mysteriously disappears, Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials where he is stunned to find Hanna as a defendant in the courtroom. Narrated by Fiennes as the adult Michael, The Reader is a powerful and intelligent period drama of love and literature, shame and guilt, truth and reconciliation.
