St Pauls Carnival Fringe Season: Good Hair Preview + Party (12A)
Dir: Jeff Stilson
Cast: Chris Rock, Eve, Ice-T 96 mins, 2009, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in July 2010
Comedian Chris Rock gets to the root of the matter on a hilarious journey through beauty salons, scientific laboratories and Indian temples in a bid to understand his daughter's question 'Daddy, why don't I have good hair?' Hair has long made an impact on the activities, relationships, bank accounts and self-esteem of the black community and Rock does an excellent job of making a subject with a loaded history both funny and deeply serious. Interviews with the public and celebrities (including Al Sharpton, Nia Long and Salt n' Pepa) reveal the time, work and money invested on their crowing glory as its stigmas and secrets are uncovered. Whether you're familiar with weaves and relaxers or not, Good Hair is a sharp, spirited and raucously entertaining documentary.

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and this month there's a focus on the music of the maestro Ennio Morricone.

Showing Now
Roman Polanski's latest is a hysterically funny descent into some very, very enjoyable bad behaviour as two sets of parents try (and fail) to talk through an incident amicably.
