Mother (15) S
Dir: Bong Joon-ho
Cast: Kim Hye-ja, Won Bin, Yoon Jae-Moon 129 mins, 2009, South Korea, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Aug 2010
Another extraordinary film from Korean director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, The Host), in which a devoted and deranged unnamed mother (Kim Hye-ja) obsessively pursues her own detective work in a bid to clear murder charges against her childlike adult son Do-joon (Won Bin). Hiring thugs and questioning witnesses, she stops at nothing - all the while getting increasingly overprotective, unpredictable and intense as the real truth turns out to be more horrifying than she thought. Taut, mysterious, full of unsettling dark comedy and truly Hitchcockian in its murder mystery elements, this is another genre-bending success from one of Korean cinema's brightest stars.

A festival of film and music
We're mad about music and film. So much so we've created a new festival dedicated to this most enduring of relationships, and this month there's a focus on the music of the maestro Ennio Morricone.
