Dir: Abbas Kiarostami
Cast: Juliette Binoche, William Shimell 106 mins, 2010, France/Italy/Iran, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Sept 2010
Legendary Iranian director Kiarostami returns to narrative cinema with a funny love story that has been widely described as a sort of Tuscan Before Sunset. Juliette Binoche (who won the Best Actress prize at Cannes) is a woman who embarks on a journey through the Italian countryside with an English writer (William Shimell) after they meet at a talk.
When the pair are taken as a married couple they go along with it and their interactions take on double meanings: are they married? Strangers? Something inbetween? We watch as they enjoy fascinating discussions about relationships, men, women and family. This is an elegant, warm and very moving film that bursts with ideas and intelligence.
