Tamara Drewe (15)
Dir: Stephen Frears
Cast: Gemma Arterton, Luke Evans, Dominic Cooper, Roger Allam 111 mins, 2010, UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Sept 2010
Stephen Frears (The Queen) brings to life Posy Simmonds' graphic novel/comic strip in this fabulously entertaining, funny romp of a film. Gemma Arterton is Tamara, once a shy, ugly teenager but now (thanks to a bit of cosmetic surgery) a glamorous, confident journalist newly returned to her childhood home in rural Dorset.
When she attracts the attention of an old flame (Luke Evans), a flash rockstar (Dominic Cooper) and an adulterous novelist (Roger Allam) her comeback causes even more of a stir in a village stuffed with neurotic weirdos and chaos ensues. Enjoyably cynical and with a dry humour that takes a turn into darker satire towards the surprising end, this is great, boisterous British fare.
