Winter's Bone (15)
Dir: Debra Granik
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes 100 mins, 2010, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Oct 2010
17-year-old Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) lives in the remote forests of Missouri's Ozark Mountains where she manages to care for her two younger siblings and catatonic mother on little to nothing. When her father goes missing, she learns that he has put their house and land up for his bail, and embarks on a dangerous journey to find him before she and her family are made homeless.
She receives practically no help from her meth-riddled neighbours as she plunges deep into the forbidding forests where hostility and resentment meet her at every turn. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, this no-nonsense, tough and unforgettable film takes you on a journey to a lost America where the promise that things will get better still rings hollow.
Winter's Bone is the replacement title for New York, I Love You, which was due to open on Fri 8 Oct but has been delayed due to circumstances beyond our control.
A Dangerous Method
David Cronenberg's Couch
Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley) is the smart, sexually disturbed woman who throws Carl Jung's (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud's (Viggo Mortensen) relationship off balance.
