Projecting the Archive: Poison Pen (PG)
Dir: Paul Stein
Cast: Flora Robson, Robert Newton, Ann Todd 79 mins, 1939, UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Sept 2010
When vicious letters are addressed to the inhabitants of a small village, accusations fly and trust is eroded, blighting the rural idyll. The tensions culminate in suicide and murder before the culprit is finally exposed. Stalwart character actress Flora Robson plays the village matriarch with her usual commanding grace, supported by a magnificent cast, not least Robert Newton and Ann Todd. The original play was penned by Richard Llewellyn, who went on to write How Green Was My Valley and None But the Lonely Heart.
