Projecting the Archive: The Halfway House (PG)
Dir: Basil Dearden
Cast: Mervyn Johns, Glynis Johns, Sally Ann Howes 95 mins, 1944, UK
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Sept 2010
WW2 witnessed the birth of the fantasy mini-genre where the supernatural administers salutary shocks to the characters rather than to the audience. A disparate group - a couple whose marriage is breaking down, a terminally ill conductor, grief-stricken parents - arrive at a Welsh country inn with a rather strange atmosphere. Why are all the newspapers a year old? This is an interesting departure by Ealing Studios from its usual fare and a perfect example of the genre.
