Pina 3D (U) S
Dir: Wim Wenders
Cast: Pina Bausch 106 mins, 2011, Germany/France/UK, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in July 2011
Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, Buena Vista Social Club) brings the work of Pina Bausch, one of dance's most innovative choreographers, to extraordinary life in this elegant and exciting documentary. Focusing on four of Bausch's most celebrated works performed by members of her repertoire, we see them staged in a variety of imaginative settings (a gym, a pool, the woods, in the city) and hear memories and recollections of the woman herself. The use of 3D is nothing short of a revelation, helping to bring Bausch's modern, radical and hypnotic choreography to stunningly visceral life (at one point an onstage waterfall soaks the dancers). A fitting tribute to a talent who tragically died just before filming began. Back by popular demand.
