The Interrupters (15)
Dir: Steve James
128 mins, 2011, USA
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Aug 2011
Steve James (Hoop Dreams) spent over a year capturing the incredible stories of a group of three 'violence interrupters': former gang members who protect their communities from the violence they once employed. These men and women roam the streets of their Chicago neighbourhoods and intervene in conflicts when moments become too heated, a job that requires great courage and credibility (something they only have because of their own personal histories). Using frank interviews and unforgettable scenes from the streets, this is a rare film, an urgent, timely, hopeful and heartbreaking record of the endemic spread of violence in the world's cities and the few brave individuals who have the guts to stand up and do something about it.
At the Fri 26 August 20:20 screening we're delighted to welcome workers from Community Resolve, who will talk about the work they are doing in Bristol around managing conflicts, gangs, youth violence, issues of Identity and community tensions.
