Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo (12A) S
Dir: Jessica Oreck
90 mins, 2009, USA/Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in Sept 2011
This fascinating documentary explores the mystery of Japan's love affair with bugs. From dragonflies to crickets, fireflies to butterflies, beetles and hornets, insects in Japan are kept as pets, sold live in vending machines and stores, the subject of videogames and celebrated in festivals, art and culture. Filmmaker/botanist Oreck explores the religious, literary and philosophical influences (namely Buddhism and Shintoism) that have made Japan unique in their enthusiasm for these all too often reviled creatures. Stunning cinematography and a lyrical, meditative style make this a spellbinding reflection on nature that has been described as "pure poetry".
4* - This documentary about the Japanese fascination with insects is a wonderfully strange, richly detailed experience...What an original and distinctive film this is. Guardian
