Meet Me In St Louis (U)
Dir: Vincente Minnelli
Cast: Judy Garland 113 mins, 1944, USA
Please note: this was screened in Dec 2011
Vincente Minnelli directed his soon-to-be wife Judy Garland in this achingly romantic musical that still thrills to this day. It's 1904 and Garland is Esther, one of four Missouri daughters all troubled by the prospect of their family uprooting to far flung New York: is this, truly, the end of an era? To quote another certain Garland film... there's no place like home. Featuring big, bright colour, ace production design and some brilliant songs - The Boy Next Door, Skip to My Lou, The Trolley Song - why not Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and transport yourself back to MGM's musical golden age.
