Werner Herzog Sunday Brunches: The Bad Lieutenant (18)
Dir: Werner Herzog
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer 122 mins, 2009, USA
Please note: this was screened in Jan 2012
A deliciously loopy, darkly comic noir set in the ravages of post-Katrina New Orleans. Nicolas Cage is Terence, a detective trying to bring down a drug lord who slaughtered a family of immigrants, while on a personal downward spiral of addiction (cocaine, painkillers, gambling and sex) and madness. Cage is glorious as the increasingly deranged cop in an intelligent performance that shines with some marvellous hallucinogenic moments involving iguanas and alligators. It's offbeat, inventive, and refreshingly unpredictable - a reminder of what the crime genre used to excel at.

Please note: this is a old season with no further events to see
We are delighted to screen three new digital prints of his classics made in partnership with his acting nemesis Klaus Kinski as well as The Bad Lieutenant wherein Nicolas Cage makes a good job of emulating a Kinski-esque crazed performance!
