Werner Herzog Sunday Brunches: Fitzcarraldo (PG) S
Dir: Werner Herzog
Cast: Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy 158 mins, 1982, West Germany/Peru, Subtitled
Please note: this is an old screening, first shown in Jan 2012
Kinski and Herzog found themselves back in the South American jungle with this, perhaps the most formidable film of Herzog's career. Kinski is Fitzcarraldo, a nineteenth century rubber baron determined to build the largest opera house in the world deep in the Peruvian jungle. To do so, however, he must drag a 300 tonne steamer over a mountain - a Herculean task that Herzog amazingly decided to recreate during the epic two year shoot. Operatically excessive in both style and subject and full of unforgettable imagery, Fitzcarraldo overwhelmingly deserves its mythical status.
Fee: £4.60 full / £3.60 concessions and get £1.00 off all meal orders £6.95 or over in the Café/Bar on the same day with your ticket. See our full range of menus here.

We are delighted to screen three new digital prints of his classics made in partnership with his acting nemesis Klaus Kinski as well as The Bad Lieutenant wherein Nicolas Cage makes a good job of emulating a Kinski-esque crazed performance!

In film normally the image comes first, followed by the music. Not so with this collaboration, where celebrated war reportage photographer Seamus Murphy created a short film to accompany each of the 12 tracks on PJ Harvey's Mercury Award-winning eighth album.

Woody Harrelson gives a bravura performance playing a monster created by director Moverman (The Messenger) and writer James Ellroy: a very, very bad cop in LA driven to his own personal destruction.
