Shame (18)
Dir: Steve McQueen
Cast: Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan, James Badge Dale 101 mins, 2011, UK
Please note: this was screened in Jan 2012
Steve McQueen's searing new feature - an uncompromising look at sex addiction - is destined to be one of the most talked about films of the year. Michael Fassbender is nothing less than transfixing as Brandon, a 30-something New Yorker balancing a busy job, an active social life, and a crippling, compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward sister Sissy (Carey Mulligan), turns up at his apartment unannounced, his carefully managed lifestyle threatens to spiral out of control. What happened in the past that clearly wounded them both? A nuanced, tragic and timely examination of the nature of need, how we live our lives and the experiences that shape us that is beautifully filmed and outstandingly performed.
We welcomed Shame's producer Iain Canning (who also produced a little film called The King's Speech) for a special Q&A in December, and you can watch it in its entirety over on DShed, where he talks about its sensitive subject matter and its reception in the US among other things.
5* "Shame confirms Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender as a fearsome double act." Telegraph
4* "This is fluid, rigorous, serious cinema; the best kind of adult movie." Guardian
4* "Brave, beautifully acted and emotionally revealing - an early strong contender for the most provocative and compelling film of the year." Empire Magazine
4* "It reconfirms McQueen as a filmmaker with an unflinching, microscopic gaze on the world." Time Out
