Sunday Brunches: Morricone's Spaghetti Westerns - Big Gundown (15) S
Dir: Sergio Sollima
Cast: Lee Van Cleef, Tomas Milian, Gérard Herter 80 mins, 1966, Spain/Italy, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
Lee Van Cleef is on great form as Corbett, a steely, unrelenting bounty hunter hired to capture and kill Cuchilo (Tomas Milian), a Mexican accused of raping and killing a 12-year-old girl. Cuchilo continually evades capture during the manhunt through Texas, while Corbett starts to doubt whether he was actually involved in the crime in the first place. Unlike Leone, Sollima's films had a political edge to them: The Big Gundown tackles capitalism, race and class and ends in not one, but two duels. A rousing, inventive score from Morricone (sampled in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds) perfectly evokes both the beauty - and the action - of the wild west.
