Sunday Brunches: Morricone's Spaghetti Westerns - Once Upon A Time In The West (15)
Dir: Sergio Leone
Cast: Charles Bronson, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards 165 mins, 1969, Italy/USA
Please note: this was screened in Feb 2012
The Spaghetti Western achieved its apotheosis with this magnificent, mesmerising eulogy to the fading American frontier and its heroes. Leone was at the very peak of his powers, pulling the best aspects of the three Dollars films together for this rousing spectacle of a film where a mysterious gunman (Charles Bronson) and rogue outlaw (Jason Robards) join forces to save a widow from a ruthless railway tycoon and a sadistic thug (Henry Fonda). Morricone's three character themes: the famous harmonica, the clip-clop banjo, the wordless solo soprano, are perfect additions to an austere yet dazzling score. A pensive, wistful meditation on death, capitalism and greed, this is a grandiose, mythical ode to everything Leone loved about America and its movies.
