Contemporary Japanese Auteurs: Dear Doctor (PG) S
Dir: Miwa Nishikawa
Cast: Tsurube Shofukutei, Eita, Teruyuki Kagawa, Haruka Igawa 127 mins, 2009, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
Ito is the only physician in a small rural village mostly made up of elderly people. Prescribing medicine, visiting sick people and dispensing advice, he enjoys an almost god-like status. Everything goes well until a widow in the village has cancer, and wants to conceal the fact from her doctor daughter. Ito finds it easy to keep her 'little secret' because he has one of his own: he's a conman with no medical qualifications who has managed to win the love and trust of the entire community - what he lacks in medical skills he makes up in kindness, patience and care. Is time running out for Ito? And is the community purposely turning a blind eye? A heartwarming character study from one-time Kore-eda protégé Nishikawa, the leading Japanese woman director of her generation, that is just what the doctor ordered.
Fee: £7.20 full / £5.60 concessions.
