Contemporary Japanese Auteurs: I Just Didn't Do It (15) S
Dir: Masayuki Suo
Cast: Ryo Kase, Asaka Seto, Koji Yamamoto, Masako Motai, Koji Yakusho 143 mins, 2007, Japan, Subtitled
Please note: this was screened in March 2012
This sobering, angry film is based on the real life phenomenon of men groping women on Japan's notoriously packed commuter trains. It centres on Teppei, a young man on his way to a job interview he finds himself falsely accused of groping a fifteen year old girl. He is arrested and encouraged to confess, and quickly, whether he's guilty or not. With a courtroom that values a high conviction rate (99.9%) above the truth, proving his innocence is going to be a tough fight indeed. A devasting critique of Japan's legal system that leaves a bitter taste.
Fee: £7.20 full / £5.60 concessions.
